Writing Contests: Try for the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize

type your way into writing contestsTake some time near Christmas to enter some writing contests, like the 2014 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize. This contest, named in honor of North Carolina novelist Thomas Wolfe, is open to all writers regardless of geographical location.

Submissions should be shorter than 12 pages (one-inch margins, double-spaced). Just keep in mind that submissions are due by January 30, 2014.

Submissions are being collected by Submittable. Keep in mind there is an entry fee of $15 for North Carolina Writers Network members and $25 for non-members. To submit by regular mail, send to Professor Tony Abbott, PO Box 7096, Davidson College, Davidson, NC 28035.

Writing Contests: Nelson Algren Short Story Contest

The Chicago Tribune’s annual Nelson Algren Short Story Contest is now accepting submissions, and you could win up to $5,000. Even better: you can submit up to 2 stories with no entry fee.

Writing Contests: Apex Christmas Fiction Contest

Pull out your quill and enter some writing contestsLooking to earn some extra money with some writing contests? Christmas can be a time of joy, tinsel and even dread. Apex Magazine is running is Merry Little Apex Christmas Flash Fiction contest and is looking for short stories about Christmas with a dark science fiction, horror or fantasy slant.

Writing Contests: Saints and Sinners Short Fiction Contest

Writing contests require your final draftIf you are thinking of entering some writing contests this month, the fifth annual Saints and Sinners Short Fiction Contest is now accepting submissions.

Submit a previously unpublished story between 5,000 and 7,000 words that contains LGBT content on the loose theme of Saints and Sinners, and you could win up to $250. Rules and submission guidelines (please note it is $15 per entry) are located here. The deadline for entries is December 23, 2013.

Writing Contests: The Mona Schreiber Prize

Choose your weapon for these writing contestsSome writing contests ask you to be a little weird.

That’s the advice for writers who want to submit an essay, short story, poem or other work to the Mona Schreiber humor contest for humorous fiction and nonfiction. Works should be less than 750 words in length, and there is a $5 entry fee per entry. So be weird; be crazy; just be creative; maybe just be yourself.
