Writing Contest: Get into the “Write Start”

type your way into writing contestsThe folks at Paste Magazine have teamed up with Biographile to create a writing contest to celebrate how hard it is to get the story started. For their “Write Start” contest, they are asking writers to submit a single opening paragraph of no more than 75 words that would inspire a reader to keep reading. To win this competition, you’ll need to be compact, descriptive and yet intriguing.

Besides bragging rights, winners will receive their opening words published on Paste and Biographile and an iPad Mini.

To enter, submit only one previously unpublished opening paragraph to their online form before January 26, 2015.

Writing Contest: Toronto Star Short Story Contest

Enter writing contests to tell your storyIf you are a writer in Canada, then you are probably already familiar with this writing contest. But, if not, it’s time for you to learn about the annual Toronto Star Short Story Contest. As one of the most lucrative competitions in Canada, the contest gives writers a chance to win $5,000 plus the tuition fee for a 30-week creative writing correspondence program at the Humber School for Writers.

Want in? Ontario residents only need to submit a previously unpublished short story (any topic) that is under 2,500 words. There is a limit of one entry per author.

Authors have until February 27, 2015 to submit their works. You can find the rules around submissions here.

Writing Contests: This one’s for the South

Pull out your quill and enter some writing contestsSometimes a writing contest needs a little Southern charm. Writers who reside within 150 miles of Memphis are invited to submit their works to this year’s short story contest cosponsored by The Booksellers at Laurelwood and Burke’s Book Store and Memphis magazine.

Entries do not have to have a Southern or Memphis theme, but they should stay within the word count of 3,000 and 4,500 words. All entries should be submitted with a $10 entry fee, and should be entered before February 1, 2015.
