Writing Contests: Tell a future story

Finish your entry to some writing contests.Are you ready to enter the writing contests of the future? Several institutions are looking for a short story (500-600 words) set in the “near future” that includes science fiction that is plausible. The winning entries will be performed as a radio play on Wisconsin Public Radio’s nationally syndicated show, “To The Best of Our Knowledge.”

Entries are due March 1, 2014, with the winning entries announced April 9, 2014 at a symposium on science and creativity at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Writing Contests: Pick up your iron pen

Writing contests require your final draftMost writing contests let you know the topic ahead of time. This writing competition is a little different. For the Iron Pen Contest, writers need to register ahead of time. On February 21, 2014, the center will supply the prompt, and everyone will have 24 hours to submit their best fiction, nonfiction or poetry work.

You can find a registration form on midwestwritingcenter.org; the cost is $10 per entry, per category. Winning entries will be announced by email at the end of February. Winners will have a chance to win a paid-in-full tuition for the David R. Collins Writing Conference in June.Good luck!

Writing Contests: Write 55 words

Finish your entry to some writing contests.Did you know that you could win some writing contests with fewer than 100 words? Well, this is one of them. Cobble a short essay or poem together using exactly 55 words (no more, no less) and submit it to Record. The winning entry will win $55.

Keep in mind that the titles don’t count against your word total; hyphenated words count as two words. There is no entry fee and you can submit multiple entries (just be sure to include your name and phone number on each.) You can fax your entry to 209-547-8186 or you can email it to Michael Fitzgerald at michaelf@recordnet.com.
